On October 24-25, BHL Program Director Martin Kalfatovic and BHL Program Manager Grace Costantino attended the Internet Archive Leaders Forum in San Francisco, CA. The meeting, attended by 23 representatives from projects partnering with Internet Archive, provided attendees with a chance to showcase their projects, discuss their collaborations with IA, and nurture ideas associated with eBooks.

NEH-funded Art of Life project held first face to face meeting in St Louis

On October 4th & 5th 2012, team members from the Art of Life project held a meeting at the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis.  While team members had been collaborating virtually since the beginning of the project in May of 2012, this was the first time all team members had met in-person.  Institutions represented were from Missouri Botanical Garden (MOBOT), Indianapolis Museum of Art (IMA), the University of Colorado Boulder (CU-Boulder); and Washington University, St Louis (WUSTL).The goals of the meeting were to review: 1) overall workflows2) feedback on the schema draft that was publicly posted August 2012

Norwegian Biodiversity Information Centre visit BHL

A team from the Norwegian Biodiversity Information Centre (NBIC), Åslaug Viken and Askild Olsen, visted with BHL Program Director Martin Kalfatovic on October 18, 2012.NBIC recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the Encyclopedia of Life to create a Norwegian EOL.Viken and Olsen were very interested in the processes and workflows of BHL. They noted that there are many treasures in Norwegian libraries that once made available online will enrich the knowledge of global biodiversity.- Martin Kalfatovic, BHL Program Director

The 2012 BHL Staff & Technical Meeting

On September 27-28, 2012, thirty-one staff members representing all 14 BHL member institutions convened at the Ernst Mayr Library at the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University for the 2012 BHL Staff and Technical Meeting. As a combined meeting, it brought together not only those that manage the digitization workflow at each member institution, but also those that work to keep BHL’s technical infrastructure running smoothly and constantly improving.

Two Cities Named Cambridge and One Library Named the Biodiversity Heritage Library

Last week the BHL Librarian and Technical Staff met at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, for one of our invaluable staff meetings (our last face to face meeting was about one year ago right after the BHL Chicago Life and Literature Conference.)  These meetings are always lively and packed full of agenda items that we generate during our monthly teleconference calls…and usually a memorable meal or some cultural event are also included! After each of these meetings we return to our home libraries laden down with an armful of tasks to complete within a specific timeframe (which we try to stick to!). BHL and EOL at the Ecological Society of America

In early August, I had the privilege of representing the Encyclopedia of Life and the Biodiversity Heritage Library at an exhibitor’s booth at the Ecological Society of America annual meeting in Portland, Oregon. The theme for the 2012 annual meeting was: Life on Earth: Preserving, Utilizing and Sustaining our Ecosystems. This theme certainly fits the broader goals of EOL and BHL.

Announcing BHL’s New Technical Director: William Ulate

On August 23, 2012, the BHL Steering Committee unanimously voted to appoint William Ulate as the new BHL Technical Director, replacing Chris Freeland, BHL’s founding technical director, who has accepted a new position as Senior Director of University Academic Computing at Washington University in St. Louis, MO. Ulate currently serves as BHL’s Global Coordinator, a capacity he will maintain alongside his new duties as Technical Director.
