Do you want to help empower global biodiversity research and serve as part of a vibrant, international community dedicated to providing free, worldwide access to biodiversity information? The Biodiversity Heritage Library seeks a Program Manager committed to elevating current successes and challenging our Program into the future by ensuring organizational excellence, fostering strategic partnerships, and embracing advances in digital technologies, information science, big data, and bioinformatics to serve the evolving needs of 21st century researchers.

Headquartered at the Smithsonian Institution, the Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL) is the world’s largest open access digital library for biodiversity literature and archives. Through the collaborative efforts of a global consortium of over 80 natural history, botanical, research, and national libraries, BHL provides free access to over 57 million pages from hundreds of thousands of volumes, representing over 500 years of scientific exploration, discovery, and data. Working closely with the international community of biodiversity data providers and natural history collection service organizations, including GBIF, CoL, CETAF, TDWG, EOL and iDigBio, BHL is part of the core infrastructure for biodiversity research and data. As an important contributor to this global network, BHL helps equip researchers with the information they need to tackle today’s biodiversity, environmental, and climate crises.

As the Program Manager, you will help BHL build its partnerships and maintain and grow its infrastructure and services, ensuring that the Library fulfills the research needs of a global, diverse audience. You will be responsible for managing BHL’s administrative and financial functions and providing project management support across BHL’s global consortium. Additional responsibilities include partner stewardship; fundraising and grant-writing support; participation in national and international organizations to develop strategic partnerships; and facilitation of stakeholder input to inform BHL’s growth and development.

The Program Manager is an essential member of the BHL Secretariat located at the Smithsonian Libraries in Washington, D.C. with offices in the National Museum of Natural History. This is a GS-12 federal position (salary range USD $83,398 – $108,422) open only to U.S. citizens. It includes a comprehensive benefits package offering vacation and sick leave, life/health insurance, and retirement program options.

AVAILABLE PROJECTS:

Content Analysis.
This project will be an analysis of the quantity of literature underpinning the field of biodiversity, the amount of that literature in the public domain, the representation of each discipline (delineated by taxon group) within BHL, an exploration of methodologies to scope the collections, and areas where BHL may target development to better serve the research population. Host: BHL Chicago partners (The Field Museum of Natural History and the Chicago Botanic Garden) with mentors Library Directors Christine Giannoni and Leora Siegel.

Import of Crowdsourced Data Corrections and Enhancements.
Building on the IMLS grant received by the Missouri Botanical Garden, Purposeful Gaming and BHL, in which BHL worked with Mary Flannagan and Tiltfactor , the mentors for this project will work with the resident to develop methodologies and propose tools for integration of crowdsourced data corrections and enhancements back into the BHL portal. Best practices will be documented for verification, trust, and multi-tier review. Host: Harvard University: MCZ, mentors Library Managers Constance Rinaldo and Joseph deVeer.

Enabling image discovery within the Biodiversity Heritage Library.
Building on the successful NEH Art of Life grant, crowdsourced metadata around BHL images hosted on Flickr and Zooniverse would be integrated back into the BHL through user interface modifications to the BHL portal to enable image searching, browsing and display. The resident will work with the BHL technical team to propose best practices for integration of this data into BHL as well as sustainable methodologies for augmenting image tagging for BHL content. Host: Missouri Botanical Garden (MOBOT), mentors Library Director Douglas Holland and Data Projects Coordinator, Trish Rose-Sandler.

Digital Library Best Practices Analysis.
The mentor will work with the resident to consult with BHL partners such as DPLA and Europeana to determine how BHL data works in these large scale national and pan-national digital libraries. The resident will propose analyses of other large-scale digital libraries (HathiTrust, the Internet Archive, National Digital Library of New Zealand, Trove, for example) to categorize high value tools and services that can be built into the next version of BHL or developed with existing APIs from partners. Host: Los Angeles County Natural History Museum, mentor Chief Librarian and Curator Richard Hulser. NHM Research Library.

User Needs and Usability Analysis.
The mentor will work with the resident to identify members of the larger taxonomic and biodiversity informatics community to determine user needs and services for providing increased value to BHL content. Building on a ten year relationship with this community, BHL staff will introduce the resident to relevant initiatives hosted at the Smithsonian, such as Consortium for the Barcode of Life (CBoL) and Encyclopedia of Life (EOL) and to partners such as Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF). The resident will analyze input gathered to define recommendations and requirements for expanding the BHL digital library functionality. Host: BHL Secretariat/Smithsonian Libraries, mentor Carolyn Sheffield, BHL Program Manager.

Update on BHL-Europe and job posting for Team Leader and ICT specialist

Portrait version of the Biodiversity Heritage Library logo.

The lack of access to the published biodiversity literature is a major obstacle to efficient research and a broad range of other applications, including education, biodiversity conservation, protected area management, disease control, and maintenance of diverse ecosystems services. This literature also has cultural importance as a resource for the study of the history of science, art and other non-science applications. Currently, a large number of small projects are digitising biodiversity material in numerous institutions across the EU to make access more open, but the corpus will still be seriously fragmented. These projects do not use common standards or interfaces and are not interoperable. In alignment with the EC i2010 initiative, the project “Biodiversity Heritage Library for Europe” (BHL-Europe) aims to make the biodiversity knowledge available to everybody who is interested by improving the interoperability of European biodiversity digital libraries.

BHL-Europe will review and test different approaches for such libraries based on the experiences of the partners involved in the project. The consortium will establish a best practice approach and promote the adoption of standards and specifications for the large-scale implementation in a real-life context. BHL-Europe will provide a multilingual access point for search and retrieval of digital content through EUROPEANA. In addition, it will provide a robust multilingual portal with sophisticated search tools to facilitate the search for taxon-specific biodiversity information. The project will also develop operational strategies and processes for long-term preservation and sustainability of the data produced by national biodiversity digitisation programmes. BHL-Europe will generate activities to raise awareness and to ensure that the project outputs are known and used by the target users and that the proposed approach directly addresses user needs. BHL-Europe experience and best practice will be shared with the wider digital library community.
