DPLA Reharvest of BHL Data

On April 11, 2017 the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) reharvested all BHL data for ingest into its portal at https://dp.la/. While BHL has served as a content hub for DPLA since its launch in 2013, our data has not been updated in their portal since that launch, primarily due to the absence of a workflow on DPLA’s end for automatically harvesting new data. Since 2013, the number of BHL records in our portal has increased significantly and changes and corrections to pre-2013 records were not reflected in the DPLA portal.

BHL Goes to Chicago for DPLAfest2017

For two days in April, a group of librarians, archivists, developers and other members of the digital library community came together in Chicago for DPLAfest, an annual conference organized by the Digital Public Library of America. Focuses of this year’s conference included collaboration across institutions, public engagement, social justice, metadata quality, and the use and reuse of open access content. The BHL has been a content hub for DPLA since its launch in 2013, and we were excited to participate in this year’s conference.

Expanding Access Project: The Year in Review

Just past the halfway point of its 2-year IMLS grant period, the Expanding Access to Biodiversity Literature (EABL) project has made significant contributions to BHL’s collections and is well on its way to achieving its stated goals: securing permission for 50 in-copyright titles; adding 100 new contributors; adding 300,000 metadata records; and positioning BHL as an on-ramp for content delivered to the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA).   EABL was conceived to address some of the persistent challenges facing digital repositories in the U.S. scientific community.

The Biodiversity Heritage Library at DPLAFest 2015

BHL Program Director Martin Kalfatovic attended the DPLAFest 2015 in Indianapolis (April 17-18) representing both the BHL content hub and the Smithsonian content hub. DPLAFest drew over 300 people to the public programs held at the Indianapolis Public Library, the Indiana State Library, IUPUI University Library, and the Indiana Historical Society. DPLA Director of Content Emily Gore gave important updates on the DPLA hub model and how DPLA hopes that it will evolve over time. BHL Update at the 2014 North American GBIF Meeting

The North American Regional Node Meeting of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) occurred in Ontario, Canada on July 21-22, 2014. The meeting, themed “Advancing Informatics, Engagement and Content,” focused on progress updates and ongoing implementation tactics for the North American regional strategy. Discussions included the use of digital object identifiers (DOIs), collections and specimens in the GBIF context, organizational structure, and membership in both GBIF and the North American node.
