BHL Image Collection on EOL!

The Biodiversity Heritage Library now has its own collection of images in the Encyclopedia of Life! This collection is comprised of images that have been tagged with species name machine tags, relating the species depicted in each image. The collection currently comprises over 11,000 images representing over 10,000 taxa, and will continue to grow as additional illustrations are tagged in the BHL Flickr.

BHL Surpasses 40 Million Pages!

May we have a drum roll please…….The Biodiversity Heritage Library is pleased to announce that we have just surpassed 40 million pages in our online collection!That’s 40 million pages of open access biodiversity literature that was previously available only in the collections of a few select libraries around the world. Making this literature freely available removes these boundaries to access, thus increasing the efficiency of scientific research and discovery of the natural world for anyone with an Internet connection.

Book of the Week: The Definitive Work on the Biodiversity of Cuba

Earlier this week, one of our followers on Twitter, @BibliOdyssey, posted a blog post entitled “Cuban Critters” about the BHL book Histoire Physique, Politique et Naturelle de l’ile de Cuba (1838-57), by Ramón de la Sagra. The post highlights some of the incredible illustrations found within this work. We particularly like the plates on scorpions and spiders, as we had been searching for some colorful images of these creatures in our collection. This being the case, we thought it highly appropriate to highlight this book as our book of the week.
