TDWG 2016 meeting, La Fortuna & Alajuela Province, San Carlos, Costa Rica

The 2016 TDWG Biodiversity Information Standards meeting was held at the Centro de Transferencia Tecnológica y Educación Continua (CTEC) in San Carlos, Costa Rica. Hotels and other activities were in La Fortuna, about a 45 minute bus ride from CTEC. BHL was represented at the TDWG 2016 conference with a symposium, “BHL: 10 Years of Innovation and Growth”. The session was attended by about 70 people. The conclusion of the session was a discussion with the audience about desires for the future direction of BHL and features or services that could be implemented as BHL explores refactoring the BHL platform.

IFLA Presentation on Expanding Access to Natural History Illustrations

BHL was invited to give a talk at a one day session called “Worth a Thousand Words: A Global Perspective on Image Description, Discovery, and Access.” This session was part of the IFLA World Library and Information Congress held in Columbus, Ohio from August 13-19th 2016. The talk, entitled “Expanding Access to Natural History Images: the Biodiversity Heritage Library and its Global Consortium,” focused on the ways that BHL has sought to improve access to its images, which are mostly hidden within the books and journals on its portal.

The 31 Annual Meeting of the Society for the Preservation of Natural History Collections (SPNHC) (http://www.spnhc2016.berlin/) was jointly hosted by the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin and the Botanischer Garten und Botanisches Museum in Berlin, 20-25 June 2016. The SPNHC conference brings together representatives from natural history museums, universities, and biodiversity data aggregators and serves as a wonderful opportunity for BHL to connect with formal partner institutions, collaborators such as GBIF, as well as many BHL users.

Expanding Access and MiBio team members present at the annual Council on Botanical and Horticultural Libraries Meeting

The Council on Botanical and Horticultural Libraries hosted its 48 Annual Meeting in Cleveland, Ohio May 24-28, 2016.  With perfect weather and a packed schedule, members were kept busy experiencing a number of different museums, attending meetings and hosting member presentations and speakers.  Tours of the Cleveland Botanical Garden, West Side Market, Great Lakes Science Center, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, Dittrick Museum of Medical History, Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland Museum of Natural History, Herb Society of America, and the Holden Arboretum allowed attendees to gain a well-rounded sense of Cleveland’s landscape.
